Career Compass workbook

The Career Compass helps individuals take ownership of their career development so they can navigate within your organisation.

It provides a great set of tools to aid reflection prior to a career conversation with a manager, mentor or coach. Paired with our Manager’s Guide and Career Conversation s Toolkits for Managers, this is the perfect Career Conversation bundle to support your organisation in having effective career conversations.

How does it work?

The workbook forms the basis of the Career Compass Workshop during which participants work through the strategies and templates with a group of people. However, the Workbook can also be used independently. We suggest you work through all the templates when you will be able to focus on each template without distraction. You also might choose to add additional activities such as researching options, discussing with colleagues, friends and family or interviewing key contacts. These extra activities will require more time but may help you reach deeper insights. You could also work with a coach for added support and learning. Experiment and see what works best for you. There is no wrong way of working with these templates.

What does the Career Compass Workbook Contain?

The Career Compass Workbook provides a framework. The templates cover the ten different tools that managers receive in the Career Conversation Toolkit:

Each template provides a structure and guidelines to reflect on and think about a different element of career management.

The workbook was useful in setting out my thinking and will be a useful tool to use in the future to remind me of my thought process and to give extra confidence when needed. Whilst I haven't got a clear direction in the sense of one job title/role etc., I've got something arguably more valuable - an understanding of my motivators, values, and needs going forward.

Sophie D., Projects Manager

I would definitely recommend this workbook. I am going to apply the tools in my personal development to think more positively and objectively about next steps. And I'm going to set up a time to share with my line manager.
