New leadership development book could help high-tech companies double their revenue

The Grow Your Geeks Launch is finally here.  Today is the official launch of my new book, Grow Your Geeks – A Handbook for Developing Leaders in High-Tech Organisations. The book helps CEOs, senior leaders and HR professionals build their leadership capacity, develop their leadership capability and create a leadership culture.

Leadership development is an important part of a high-tech company’s ‘growing up’ process, Research shows that companies which don’t invest in developing their leaders make less than half the revenue compared to those who do. They deliver lower shareholder returns and have a reduced value compared to those that do. Companies need to take deliberate steps to make sure they identify, develop and support future leaders.”

I have the first-hand experience of developing leaders for fast-growing, high-tech companies. I was one of the first employees in Avanade, a joint venture between Accenture and Microsoft. As International Learning Director, I played a key role in developing the people needed to grow the organisation. And they did. Avanade grew to 1200 employees in its first year and then continued to grow organically 40% year on year.

What I learnt from that experience is that fast-growing, high-tech companies face some unique challenges. Often, they’ve grown quickly because they’ve got brilliant technologies, products and solutions. But they’re in danger of getting stuck because they don’t have enough leaders with the skills and experience to grow the business.

Frustrated by the lack of practical advice available on developing leaders, I wrote Grow Your Geeks to answer the question “How can you develop leaders who can grow your business quickly and sustainably?”

The book outlines six simple steps to help fast-growing companies develop the leaders they need to be successful. In the book, I explain each step with practical tools, techniques and tips to help you implement them with ease.

The six steps follow the acronym LEADER:

Level: what level are leaders at currently and where do they need to be?

Envisage: the leaders that you need to be successful

Assess: the leadership potential of the team

Develop: new leadership skills and behaviours

Embed: those behaviours into day to day work

Reinforce leadership throughout the organisation’s processes and practices.

“This book is a ‘must read’ for Senior Leaders and HR partners in fast growing high-tech environments. A major challenge in such a competitive arena is attracting, acquiring and retaining the brightest talent. This book truly identifies the equal challenge in developing those bright, driven and highly technical people into the leaders needed to support and sustain continued growth,” Bernice Leppard, HR Director of BravoSolution
