Our client’s challenge

In 2017, the latest UNDP Global Staff Survey indicated that employees craved opportunities for career development. With a range of different contract types as well as different geographies and locations, there were wide discrepancies between the experience of staff regarding their opportunities/aspirations.

Aligned with the People for 2030 Strategy, they wished to enhance the employee experience and promote a continuous learning culture. Their goal was to empower nearly 20,000 personnel to reach their full potential and create a work environment of alignment between personal and business growth.

The Virtual Career Lab initiative was launched to address this challenge while recognising the need to communicate to audiences across time zones with varied levels of English proficiency in over 170 countries.

Our solution and results

The Virtual Career Labs are a low-cost and high-impact way to link career management and learning. The labs create a dynamic environment of “learning by doing” where employees gain skills by adopting self-driven career management behaviours.

Beyond webinars, they promote dialogue by providing exercises, tools and guidance for career development. The labs are delivered monthly at different time zones and recordings are made available so employees can access at any time. They encourage discussions before, during and after the event by creating interactive presentations with pre-assignments, in-session polls, exercises and Q&A sessions.

The Virtual Career Labs focus on various topics that support all UNDP personnel in their career journey planning. Lab topics include:

  • Strategies to accelerate your career development
  • Communicating effectively – how to adapt your style to build relationships and communicate with others
  • Silence the imposter – how to eliminate self-doubt and build confidence in yourself

By the end of 2021, we had delivered 26 VCLs in partnership with UNDP with the following results:

  • 3661 total registrations
  • 1860 total views (live and on-demand)
  • 98.1% reported being satisfied or very satisfied
  • 97.4% are likely or very likely to recommend the VCLs to colleagues
